***ONE OF ONLY 91 NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION COPIES AUTOGRAPHED BY THE POET*** THE COW'S IN THE CORN A ONE-ACT IRISH PLAY IN RHYME BY ROBERT FROST Gaylordsville: The Slide Mountain Press, 1929. Limited Edition [See Crane A13]. Colorfully decorative paper-covered flexible boards with a pattern of squares and circles in red-orange and yellow on a white background. 4 3/4" by 6 1/2". 32 pages. This book was published by James and Hilda Wells. James Wells, who was wealthy enough to engage in Fine Press Printing, established The Slide Mountain Press, and talked Robert Frost into permitting him to print and published a Limited Edition of "A One-Act Irish Play" written by Frost and called, "The Cow's in the Corn." As stated on the Limitation Page: THE SECOND BOOK PUBLISHED BY THE SLIDE MOUNTAIN PRESS NINETY-ONE COPIES PRINTED AND BOUND BY JAMES & HILDA WELLS EACH SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR NUMBER "53" THIS COPY IS BOLDLY AUTOGRAPHED BY THE POET ON THE HALF-TITLE PAGE WITH HIS TYPICAL FOUNTAIN-PEN-AND-BLACK-INK SIGNATURE, AND IN HIS UNIQUE AND INIMATABLE HANDWRITING: ROBERT FROST FRANCONIA Although Crane states that this Limited Edition is Signed with only Robert Frost's name, this Copy Number 53 is also inscribed by Frost with "FRANCONIA" which refers to Franconia, New Hampshire where Robert Frost and his family lived upon their return from England in 1915 until about 1920, and where Frost may have heard the story about "the cow's in the corn" and/or began to write the play. Covers slightly bowed, else a Fine Autographed Limited Edition Copy in nice, tight, clean and very collectible condition without any previous owners' bookplates or ink inscriptions or markings of any kind of an Early and Rare Printing of a Robert Frost Play.
