Peress was present during the seizure of the American Embassy in Tehran, which turned this from an objective journalistic project into an intensely personal experience. His attempts to see beyond the Western media's portrayal of the Iranians as insane fanatics led to photographs that "do little to describe another people and place, but go a long way toward measuring the distance separating perceptions and cultures" (from Telex Iran). Nearly thirty years later, as Iran continues to boil with political and social unrest, this book is as essential as ever. The title refers to the telexes Gilles sent and received while in Iran that punctuate and contextualize these magnificent photographs, in which confusion, alienation, and tension dominate. This book has been incredibly preserved. EXTREMELY RARE. Cased in a black cloth-bound clamshell, with the title stamped in a reverse 45-degree angle. Artist's name is stamped horizontally. It measures 15 7/8 x 11 5/8 inches. Inside is a green folder, 15 x 11 inches, which contains a perfectly produced silver gelatin PRINT, one of two variants, SIGNED on the back and NUMBERED. This print is #41 of 70 and measures 8 ½ x 12 ¾ inches on 11 x 14 inch paper. The book is a hardcover, designed and printed identically to the clamshell. Measures 15 x 10 ¾ inches. Inside is the original softcover version of "Telex Persan." Features an afterword by Gholam-Hossein Sa'edi and a biography of Peress.
