Description
E N T H U S I A S T ART BOOKS & FINE ART We purchase American Artist Estates as well as art libraries and our goal is to provide, through eBay, a constantly replenished veritable "candystore" of rare and out-of-print books and catalogs and fine artworks for the lover of American & European prints and paintings... The item you are bidding on is: BRUCE LACEY 40 YEARS OF ASSEMBLAGES, ENVIRONMENTS & ROBOTS, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, England, a VERY SCARCE 12-page catalogue published in 1975, large 4to size, softcover, Very Good- condition [museum stamps interior; one inch split at top of spine; catalog sticker lower left corner of front cover, artist's name printed on back cover for filing purposes], text in English, 10 illustrations of the artist and his works, lengthy biographical and bibliographical sections, listings of (1) Major Happenings & Events, (2) Exhibitions, (3) Television Work, (4) Records, Music, (5) Films, list of assemblage, robot and other works in exhibit, notes by the artist etc. Reminds us a lot of Edward Kienholz. From Wikpedia: "Professor" Bruce Lacey, (along with Viv Stanshall), remains one of Britain's great eccentrics. After completing his national service in the RAF he became established on the avantgarde scene with his performance art and mechanical constructs. He has been closely associated with The Alberts performance group and The Goon Show. His most famous appearance was as Paul McCartney's flute playing gardener in the Beatles' feature film Help!. He also gains mention on the Fairport Convention L.P. "What We Did On Our Holidays" in the song "Mr Lacey", written by Ashley Hutchings. He toured England in the mid seventies with his children's SCI-FI theatre show and became involved in 'Earth Magic' with his then wife Jill Bruce, mounting a number of performance pieces and exhibitions. Now aged 79 he lives in a farmhouse in Norfolk surrounded by a bizarre collection of his creations. In spite of ill health he is still working. His latest project he calls 'vox humana exploration' using his voice through a series of effects to perform his own songs plus those of David Bowie, Rod Stewart and Queen. Lacey contributed to Jasia Reichardt's Cybernetic Serendipity exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, exhibiting a robotic owl and actors: Rosa Bosom and Mate plus a sex-simulator. Photographs of some of his mechanical devices can be found in Reichardt's book Robots (Thames and Hudson, 1978). A PRIMARY source on this artist! To our knowledge, the only record of the exhibit published by the gallery, and another copy will be very difficult to find.
