(note: the 'Huck Finn' was self-published by the author. According to Mark Twain's 'Autobiography', 'Charles Webster' was Mark Twain's (Samuel Clemens') registered business-name as publisher)The case was specially hand-crafted for this copy. Hard cover, original publisher's pictorial dark green cloth (please, excuse my scanner), stamped in black and gold (very little cloth wear), 6.3/4" x 8.1/2", 366 pages + 174 illustrations and frontispiece "Huckleberry Finn" by Kemble, second frontispiece is a bust of MT (cloth is not visible, "photogravure co. n.y."), very good binding, very little soiling, 2 creases; a little wear, a few page-corner folds. Copies in such very good condition are extremely rare. POINTS of second state of the first edition: with additional last blank page and without publisher's catalog at the end. The most errors of the first state are corrected; The frontis of MT bust is tipped in and printed on special thick paper No cloth visible under the bust with a signature of Twain underneath and the sculptor's name and the Photogravure Co., and with the sculptor's name also on the side of the bust itself. Also has a frontis illustration of Huckleberry Finn dated 1884 by E.W. Kemble. Dated 1885 on the title page and 1884 on the copyright page. The following points corrected:  Page 9 - "decides" instead of "decided" in Chapter VI heading; Page 13 - 'Him and another Man" listed correctly on page 87; and page 57, up 11 lines "with the saw". Other points are as follows: last 5 on page number 155 does not match the type-style of the 15 preceding it no signature mark 11 on page 161; the "l" is present in Col Grangerford and the "b" is slightly offset in "no-body" on line 7, page 143. "Most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred; one or two were experiences of my own, the rest those of boys who were schoolmates of mine. Huck Finn is drawn from life; Tom Sawyer also, but not from an individual -- he is a combination of the characteristics of three boys whom I knew, and therefore belongs to the composite order of architecture. The odd superstitions touched upon were all prevalent among children and slaves in the West at the period of this story -- that is to say, thirty or forty years ago. Although my book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls, I hope it will not be shunned by men and women on that account, for part of my plan has been to try to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves, and of how they felt and thought and talked, and what queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in. -- The Author.." Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, first published in America in January 1885, has always been in trouble. According to Ernest Hemingway, it was the "one book" from which "all modern American literature" came, and contemporary critics and scholars have treated it as one of the greatest American works of art. Of all MT's novels, it was also the one that sold best at its initial appearance. "You don't know about me, without you have read a book by the name of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,' but that ain't no matter." -- Huck Finn" One of American literature's most fascinating sights is watching Huck's role in that novel grow as his figure attracts more and more of MT's imagination. Writing Tom Sawyer led MT back to his own childhood, and that somehow led him to Huck. MT became so absorbed that he began writing Huckleberry Finn -- and letting Huck tell the story himself -- even before Tom Sawyer was published. It is an amusing story if such scrap-work can be called a story. The author rarely fails when he sets out to tickle the ribs of young or old. There is so little genuine wit in the world, that the little must be made to go a great way. The funny book will always be read in this world of dryness and dearth. Comedy pays better than tragedy. SCARCE COLLECTIBLE. To all of my customers. I sell antique books, which are often heavier and bigger than the modern books and therefore will cost more on shipping than the from ebay required $4.00 for the very slow Media Mail, which I now have to offer as first option. Also, these delicate and rare items will need more material and care to package, which is not included in the $4.00 and with no option to add.! Therefore, I will leave a note with the actual media mail shipping costs at the end of the item description if this item will exceed the required $4.00 (including material + required delivery confirmation). I will send you an invoice with the actual shipping/handling costs for insured Media Mail (if you would like to have the item send via Media Mail!). Also, I have no other choice as to require insurance (Media Mail only), but for valuable items highly recommended for all shipping ways. So, if you prefer Media Mail shipping, please add. the insurance fee of actual winning bid to given Media Mail rate(rates >> see at shipping section); or just wait for my invoice, I will adjust. If the actual Media Mail shipping costs for an item will exceed the from ebay allowed/requested max. of $4.00 and actual shipping costs (which the USPS postal service would charge me) are not covered by the buyer, I will not mail the item until the difference is paid by the buyer. Please keep in mind, that the very slow and often not much cheaper Media Mail goes per truck over CO,NV,AZ etc. and needs often NOT 2-9 days as ebay stated, BUT 1-3 weeks, sometimes even longer [!!] to arrive >> since Media Mail is also subject for inspection!! BUT for all of you who like to receive the item fast, you still have the choice to go with the much faster (per air 1-4 days!!) and not much more expansive Priority mail, where insurance would be still optional for many of my items.Just let me know and I will send you a revised ebay or a paypal invoice for Priority Mail or Express Mail shipping. Please see Shipping rates, insurance fees and shipping information at shipping/handling section below. We can, by special arrangement, offer some short-term payment installment plans and we will hold (lay-away) your item(s) until it is paid in full. The shipping price includes solid packaging + delivery confirmation on all of my packages within the US (insurance labels are NOT traceable over the internet !!). I cannot take any responsibility for lost items or damaged items, therefore I would highly recommend insurance by higher valued items, please see rates below.I also offer Express which is insured up to $100.00, but add.'l insurance can be purchased & Express international shipping (fully insured and traceable and is therefore strongly recommended !!), - rates please see below. To all International customers: Please see shipping rates for item below. When item does not fit in the flat rate envelope or box, I always have a little note at end of the item description. The rate displayed is the price of highest zone/country for your orientation what it might cost, BUT in most cases the shipping rate might be lower. Please don't use ebay's 'country link' - the shipping price displayed will be not the correct one if the item does NOT fit in the flat rate envelope or flat rate box!!!! Please ask or just wait for invoice, I will adjust. Priority flat rate envelope or box & Express flat rate envelope is the same price for all countries. Thank you. INTERNATIONAL: I usually try to fit item in flat rate envelope -> Priority (no insurance coverage offered) or Express - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -> is fully insured & has tracking number or Priority flat rate box (some insurance coverage - vary per country). By multiple or bigger items/packages -> Rates vary per country (I always have it noted at the end of item description if item/package goes after weight). Please ask if flat rate is not given (weight limited up to 4 pounds by envelope or by flat rate box up to 20 pounds) -> it is mostly the best rate. Add.'l insurance coverage can be purchased for all Priority packages incl. flat rate envelope or box -> it will be not a flat rate anymore, BUT after weight -> the rates will increase! Please ask. The published form of a literary work. 2. The number of copies, as of a book or newspaper, printed at one time or at several times from plates substantially UNALTERED. Only the print from the SUBSTANTIALLY ALTERED PLATES indicates a new edition. PRINTING: One run during the production of a book. In many cases single prints are indicated by the date of printing on the title page. The modern books have a bar-code on the copyright page indicating the printing ("1" is present in bar-code) or "A" or stated "first printing"). For example all later printings of a First Edition are still a "First Edition". STATE: Small changes in the plates, like correcting the errors, broken types or taking out an illustration during the printing process, result in small differences. Different states can be still parts of one printing. Normally the early states have a very high catalog value. ISSUE: The amount of produced books, or newspaper, etc. during one edition or printing. CONTACT & FEEDBACK Back to Top If you e-mail me about an item, please include always the item number. FEEDBACK POLICY: We have adopted a feedback policy that is beneficial to both parties. 4-vadomo-7 / Nicklaus Book Store considers an eBay transaction successful and finished, when the customer posts positive feedback for this item. We will reciprocate within 1-3 days. Before leaving Negative or Neutral, please contact us to see how we can work it out. RETURN POLICY Back to Top If you are not happy with the merchandise, contact me immediately by e-mail to see how we can resolve the deal to our mutual satisfaction before leaving neutral or negative feedback. I will be as fair as I can, but will not issue refunds for buyers remorse or errors in bidding. I will do my best to accurately describe lots for sale, but on occasion I make mistakes or simply can't explain every detail of the item due to time constrains. If you have any questions, ask them before placing a bid and I will reply promptly. NON-PAYMENT POLICY Back to Top NON-PAYING BIDDERS: Because of the costs involved with listing on ebay, I cannot tolerate Non-Paying Bidders. PLEASE REMEMBER: As outlined by eBay, your bid is a contract. Place a bid only if you are serious about buying the item. If you are the winning bidder, you will enter into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from the seller. You should contact the seller to resolve any question before bidding. I pay eBay to list and sell my items, it is unfair to the seller when buyers do not complete the transaction. Payment should be made within 10 days after auction has closed. If payment is not received within this time period or if no other payment agreement is made, you will be notified by Ebay (NON-PAYING ALERT). If it becomes necessary for me to request a refund of fees from Ebay for any reason, there is a risk for the non-paying bidder of suspension or expulsion after 3 such offenses. Please keep this in mind, since prompt payment insures that both parties will be happy while maintaining the good will and integrity most people have come to expect from Ebay.
