I had swung on the night before, down at the border, and as soon as I got up there under thecanvas, I went to sleep. I needed plenty of that, after three weeks in Tia Juana, and I was still getting it when they pulled off to one side to letthe engine cool. Then they saw a foot sticking out and threw me off. I tried some comical stuff, but all I got was a dead pan, so that gag was out. They gave me a cigarette, though, and I hiked down the road to find something to eat. That was when I hit this Twin Oaks Tavern. It wasnothing but a roadside sandwich joint, like a million others in California..."        CAIN, JAMES M.. The Postman Always Rings Twice. Alfred A. Cain's seminal debut, a hardboiled novel of crime-fiction that is subsequently regarded as one of the most important works of its respected genre. A story themed on sex and violence, Cain, pens a masterpiece that involves a loner-traveling across and finally resides in California. Frank Chambers, the male lead, works at the diner of which is ran by a young, attractive female whom is married to an older man. As Frank and Cora develop a strong passion for eachother and a possible future of owning the diner, a murderous scheme develops between the two. To rid of the husband, the two partners in crime stage an accident that only fails--leaving Cora's husband injured and suffering from amnesia. As the second plot surfaces and proves successful, the husband dies in a purposely staged car-crash that seems obvious to the lead investigator, and brings Cora in for charges. The unsuccessful attempts to prosecute Cora lead to her being acquitted, and eventually freed. In an ironic feet, Cora plans to return to Frank, however, upon her travel she is tragically killed by a car accident.  Basis for the acclaimed film adaptation in 1946, directed by Tay Garnett, starring a young Lana Turner, John Garfield, and Hume Cronyn.   The scarce first edition of this classic crime-noir, with the original dust jacket that has not benefited from ANY RESTORATION        Due to the abuse of few, our return policy is now changed for all.
