Description
“IN UMBRA RES” - SIGNED/NUMBERED LIMITED FIRST EDITION Photography by Paul Graham   National Museum of Photography, Bradford, UK / Cornerhouse Publications, Manchester, UK 1991.   SIGNED/NUMBERED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, PRINTING of only 500 COPIES     In the midst of Paul Graham's frustrated attempts to capture images that would express his feelings about the Northern Ireland Troubles, he was detained by British soldiers and questioned about his presence on an estate at which they were operating. He was let go and advised to make himself scarce. But he managed to surreptitiously fire off a few shots on his camera of the soldiers dispersing that finally showed him the way to find what he was looking for. These off-the-cuff photos essentially instructed Graham to not look so directly at the subject – that the heart of the conflict he was seeking to document was reflected in the landscape and the faces of those affected.   FROM THE PREFACE: "If you find yourself in a dark place, without any light, and the night is upon you, and should you try to look directly at something, no matter how big it is, no matter that you know where it is, you simply cannot see it. However, if you avert your gaze from the centre, if you look to the edges, using the corner of your eye, the periphery of your vision, you can begin to make something out."   Therein is the key to this book, which literally translates as "In The Shadows Of." Graham subsequently turned his lens toward the subtler reverberations of the Troubles and found that these less direct photos better conveyed his sense of the injustice of it all.   In Circa Art Magazine, Paul Bonaventura says, "'In Umbra Res' marks a turning point in Graham's work, a watershed which the photographer himself identified in an interview from the mid-1990s: 'Photography is a medium with a unique and particular link to reality. Previously there was no problem about this, the world was out there, and you simply had to put your camera over your shoulder and go out with an open heart and head to observe this reality. This was the 'old consciousness' if you like. The problem is that over the past two decades our perception of reality has changed from something 'out there' to something 'within us,' a blend of external, internal, past and present stimuli, personal and collective beliefs, mediated and original ideas...' 'Troubled Land' was the last group of photographs by Graham that dealt exclusively with the veneer of the visible world. With 'In Umbra Res,' and the New Europe book to which it gave rise, the photographer argued for a more holistic, psychologically charged version of reality - fragmentary certainly, but one that takes account of everything we carry with us as intellectual and emotional beings...."   This VERY RARE FIRST (and ONLY) "LIMITED" EDITION is offered in Very Fine condition, and is SIGNED and NUMBERED. It is a hardcover, bound in blue cloth with a large tipped-in photo of a Union Jack painted on a wall, the red paint dried as it dripped downward. Comes in a protective plastic sleeve.
