Description
NOTE (Sept. 2nd): I will accept $1,950 before this closes Sept. 5th; after that, I will list it on the major bookselling site for $3,800. A first state Huck Finn is worth $5,000-$10,000. If $1,950 isn't low enough for you, oh well; good luck in finding another 1st state for under $5k. HUCKLEBERRY FINN Mark Twain 1885 1st/1st VG Description:           TRULY RARE FIRST STATE (ALL POINTS) COPY    Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)  1885, Charles Webster and Co., NY     1st STATE (Issue) of 1st PRINTING of 1st AMERICAN EDITION     in ORIGINAL PUBLISHER BOARDS (Green w/elaborate Gilt and Black stamped art and blocking)    FIRST ISSUE / FIRST STATE POINTS INCLUDE:     1   Title Page is a cancel;   2   Title page has year 1884 on verso;   3    Heading for chapter 6 reads "Decided" (later corrected to "Decides") on page 9;   4   "Him and another man" listed incorrectly at page 88, on page 12;   5    Page 57, 11 lines from end, text reads "with the was"   6    Tablecloth under the bust of Twain at frontis is clearly VISIBLE, and Heliotype Printing Co. imprint is present;   7    Signature mark 11 missing on page 161;   8    Page 283 is a cancel;   9    Final leaf is blank;   10  Page  143, the "l" is missing in the "Col" (near the illustration at the top of the text;                   CONDITION           Overall, a nice copy of the true first issue, in well-above-average condition for a 120-year-old book usually handled by generations of young boys until the boards fell off, requiring it to be rebound. This is the original binding, with the pictorially stamped-in cover and spine, decorated and lettered in gilt and black, with far-below-average loss of gilt. There are, of course, signs of wear on the exterior but this is a handsome copy despite its minor flaws. The overall look of the book is solid, square, and straight, and the cover illustrations are well-preserved; a volume to be displayed proudly on one's bookshelf.      Internally, the text block is sound and the leaves are in very good condition (no writing, tears, folds, and only occasional foxing), with only the delicate half-title and frontis showing any wear (some edge loss); the frontis retains its tissue-guard, although it is wavy. The endpapers are in good condition except for the gutters, which are serrated, but this is a minor flaw. The 174 illustrations by Kemble are all in great condition. There is no odor in the text block.              All in all a very nice copy of a TRUE first state Huckleberry Finn.            _________________           Thanks for looking         *note on photo: flash reflected off upper left corner of book.
