Description
Book Description: WHEN THE DALTONS RODE, Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran and Co., 1931. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dj Condition: Good. DALTON, Emmett. When the Daltons Rode, 313pp. Photographically illustrated. In original brown cloth with smoking gun illustration on the front cover. Signed Copy. Very rare in dj and incredibly so to be signed and have the dj present. The dj is chipped and has a few tears with a few smudges, but is still beautiful with all lettering and pictures still beautiful. The inside cover was penciled in with excerpts from three pages and is darkened where a signed letter from Emmett Dalton was laid in for many years. That letter is framed and available for interested parties. Emmett Dalton [1871-1937] began his career as a Kansas lawman before switching sides with his older brothers and robbing banks for a living. He is the only member of the infamous Dalton Gang to survive the 1892 attempt to rob two banks simultaneously in their hometown of Coffeyville, Kansas. Four members of the gang were killed as well as four townsmen. Dalton, wounded by more than a dozen bullets, was sentenced to life in prison then pardoned in 1907 after serving 14 years behind bars. This first person account reads like a Zane Gray novel with Emmett presenting his unique role in, arguably, the most deadly street battle of the west. “The moment a hunted man has definitely made up his mind that he will not be taken alive he has given a hostage to fate. He has signed his own death warrant. It’s only a matter of time until it is served.” When the Daltons Rode was a resounding hit when it was published in 1931. Three years after Emmett’s death Hollywood brought his tale to the silver screen in a popular movie, of the same name, starring Randolph Scott, Broderick Crawford and Andy Devine. Signed by Author Good luck and be sure to check out my other auctions.
