Description
A FOUNDATIONAL DOCUMENT: "THE TATE COLLECTION". London, 1897. A compendium of photogravures of Henry Tate's personal art collection of 65 paintings and 3 sculptures which he donated to the British people to create the Naional - or more commonly - the Tate galleries in London. This is signed and dated November, 1897 by Tate himself and given to his son Edwin and Edwin's wife, May. Folio, full red leather, hingers abraided but strong, some abrasions to bottom of front board; printed without title page, heavy paper with clear strong impressions. An important family memento which represents the beginnings of the British collection of modern art. Henry Tate himself was an intriguing man: he was born the son of an impoverished Unitarian minister in Liverpool, England. At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to a relative who was a grocer; by the time Henry turned 20, he already owned a grocery shop himself. Soon he owned half a dozen grocery stores and fifteen years later he made the most important disovery of his life: sugar. He went into refining with a man named Wright and soon brought the most current technologies of the time to England: the most important was the sugar cube, a German invention for which he paid the manufacturing rights and from which he projected his fortune. Hentry Tate retained his interest in self-improvement throughout his life by seeking to improve the lot of his own employees and finally, by introducing the best in modern art to the entire British nation.
