Description
Photos: [ Many photos of each volume below... please allow time for photos to load. Over 200 photos to see. ] Description: Where to begin.... This is a auction for seven / 7 volumes, a leather bound set of travel journals of Eugenie Abele. She was from Madison Wisconsin, and worked in the office of the Attorney General in Wisconsin. These journals date from the June 1924 to September 1924, an 83 day trip. However, numerous items within the journals are from the 1920's and 1930's. As found. These journals are just filled with TRAVEL TREASURE. Post cards, clippings, photos, menus, pressings, important letters, stamps, passport, pressed plants, trunk labels, clippings from garments worn, regional booklets, biography notes, mementos, etchings, 100's of period souvenirs, railway pass stubs, tokens of the trip, period fashion, travel modes by car, train, boat, along with personal recollections, reflections of the experience. The photos don't do justice to the amount of treasure and personal recollections of the adventure of this MODERN WOMAN, traveling through EUROPE. Condition is fair to good. You have to realize these are old, 80 years. Paper is aging, some clippings are fragile, at some point a few of the bindings have been exposed to moisture. Please see all the photos. This is a RARE opportunity to own a piece of personal history, travel biography, and emersion in the experience of travel during the Roaring Twenties. Ideal for collectors, perhaps background for an author or script writer looking for authentic period documentation of travel, point of view, of a thoroughly modern American Woman. Great backdrop to any 1920s era story, travel buffs, results of liberality of women and their ability. VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: Due to the nature of this item, it is being sold as is. We will not be able to accept a return. Simply because there are hundreds of items within each volume, we simply couldn't tell if they were complete upon return. Please inquire if you have any questions. Additional Photos: = And = Each Volume Details: Volume I: My Trip Abroad : England. Trip starts on June 26, 1924, however preparation for the trip is documented starting 1923, as of how she became aware of the trip. The trip itself is sponsored and conducted by Miss Ruth E. Garwood, known as the Garwood Party, she is noted as being from the University of Wisconsin, Romance Languages Department. Euginie Abele notes that these volumes were bound by F. C. Baluss, who later became her husband. There are letters signed by the Governor of Wisconsin, Mr John J. Blaine, in recommendation of Ms. Abele's qualities as an American citizen. Ms Abele worked in the Attorney Generals office and there are numerous notations, letters, etc. Includes numerous pages of biographical text. Photos of Volume I / One: This is only a sampling, much more in this volume. Volume II: My Trip Abroad : England [continued] Starts on July 14, 1924, with a journal entry after leaving Edinburgh. Filled with letters, clippings, souvenirs from the trip, biographical details of the cities visited. Wonderful post cards and photos, ephemera of all sorts. Includes numerous pages of biographical text. Photos of Volume II / Two: This is only a sampling, much more in this volume. Volume III: My Trip Abroad : France : Starts on July 24, 1924, with notation of leaving Dover, England to Calais France. Volume includes Paris, Versailles, Malmason, Rueil, Rheims, Battlefields, Avignon, Strasbourg. Numerous laid in items, biographical details, historical sites, post cards, lovely etchings, clippings, letters, official booklets, travel paraphernalia of all sorts. Just a wonderful look at the glories of France. Includes numerous pages of biographical text. Photos of Volume III / Three: This is only a sampling, much more in this volume. Volume IV: My Trip Abroad : France, Italy : Riviera, Nice, Monte Carlo, Genoa, Pisa, Rome : Starts July, 29, 1924 in Avignon France. This volume is in the worst condition as the binding has been wet at one time and has expanded, and has some foxing. However, the text and contents are fairly unscathed. The pages are a little more stiff, but as you'll see in the photos the pages are clean, and intact as they are in the other volumes. Wonderful travel treasure abounds, including shells and pebbles from the beach in Nice. Exploring the Roaring Twenties in France and Italy, an exciting journey continues. Includes numerous pages of biographical text. Photos of Volume IV / Four: This is only a sampling, much more in this volume. Volume V: My Trip Abroad : Florence, Venice, Milan Italy : This volume starts on August 11, 1924. The intimate exploration of Italy continues. Wonderful photos, postcards, notes, letters, documents, clippings, maps, travel excerpt clippings, and much more. Lovely lithographs and illuminated postcards. Includes numerous pages of biographical text. Some spine damage, text is clean and intact as it is in all the other volumes. Photos of Volume V / Five: This is only a sampling, much more in this volume. Volume VI: My Trip Abroad : Italy, Switzerland, Jungfrau, Interlaken, France, Germany : This portion of the journey starts August 20, 2004 in Milan Italy to Brigue Switzerland, Montreux, Lake Geneva, Interlaken, Lucern, Rigi, Strasbourg, France to Mayence Germany, down the Rhine River to Cologne. Complementing this journal are more wonderful snippets and mementos from Ms. Abeles personal experience through the European climes. Maps, postcards, stubs, receipts, letters, photos and personal diary entries are just wonderful. Many of the locations are still popular today, many were lost in WWII. Again, an amazing historical journey through the eyes of the traveler. Cover is creased, fold is seen in photo. Includes numerous pages of biographical text. Photos of Volume VI / Six: This is only a sampling, much more in this volume. Volume VII: My Trip Abroad : Belgium, Holland, Netherlands, Return to New York City : This portion of the journey September 2, 1924 in Brussels Belgium. This volume is perhaps the thickest, and full of the most interesting items. The best for last. It includes the return trip to New York City, and for a Wisconsin girl, this was just as exciting as seeing the rest of the world. Includes poetry, notes, and photos of fellow Garwood group travelers. The final pages are of the group, on the boat home, and a sort of where they are now... who got married, and children. Truly interesting. Includes numerous pages of biographial text. Photos of Volume VII / Seven: This is only a sampling, much more in this volume. I have not actually counted the total number of pages, there are over 200 photos above, and these are just a sample of what is inside these books. Without counting, I would guess about 200 plus pages per volume, so over 1400 pages at least, perhaps more.Bid with confidence, this is a WONDERFUL lot!
