Description
Please take the time to look at the two standard copies of this book that are available on the internet. The first, in poor condition (the covers look like the book has been left in a barn for fifty years), is $1,200 and can be seen at this linkhttp://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.art-books.com/artbooks/images/items/08-0072.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.antiqbook.com/boox/witt/08-0072.shtml&h=288&w=240&sz=21&hl=en&start=1&usg=__X0d-htD_0GPEYuR8qemEtHG40UM=&tbnid=aRvlojQaLtaXdM:&tbnh=115&tbnw=96&prev=/images%3Fq%3DSchatz,%2Bhis%2Blife%2Band%2Bwork,%2Bmonography%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DGThe second example is available on Amazon, also with condition problems, is $1,450 and can be seen at this linkhttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/offering/list/-/B000NVWDKQ/allOK! Now that thats out of the way, let me begin. I went through all my Judaica auction catalogs (dating back to 1913, I have about three hundred), and could not find one single auction which had anything but the standard issue of this book, which is "Baruch (Boris) Schatz. His Life And Work A Monograph. Part One", published in Israel in 1925 (Part Two was never published, as Schatz died). The standard issue of this book is thus; a cloth cover with an inlaid metal plaque designed by Schatz, and forty plates are in the book, each as regular pages of the book itself. This copy that is available for purchase is a deluxe, never seen fancy issue of this book that is designed like so: First, is the box, which appears to be thick wooden covers with the title of the book printed in gold, an inlaid plaque, and the corners have a design of menorahs in a circle. The reverse side of the box has seven metal rivets, and the personal seal of Boris Schatz in the center, which is of Schatz by the Ark of the Covenant, and underneath him in Hebrew "Prof. Boris Schatz".The box is opened, and at top is the written part of the book, in softcover (including a laid-in plate of a photo of Boris Schatz). Then, unlike the standard edition of the book where the forty photo plates of the Biblical and Zionist sculptures by Schatz are just pages in the book, here each photo plate has been given its own cardboard backing, and the reverse side of the backing has a description printed in English, Hebrew, and German. The good news; the well crafted box is in excellent condition with some wear at the edges, while the book and the plates are in mint condition. The inside of the box is stamped "Made In Palestine", and there is a handwritten dedication in the inner flap of the box that reads "To Charles S. Greene, my friend always, Abe Harris, November 20, 1940". All the plates are numbered on the reverse side, 1 through 40. The bad news; eight plates with their backing are missing. So instead of having forty individual plates with their descriptive backing, there are thirty two.The box is 16 inches high and 12 inches wide. Don't let those eight missing plates (the images which you can see in the standard issue of this book), make you pass by this phenomenal, likely unique edition of this Bezalel book. You'll never see anything like it again, and neither will I.Questions are welcome, as are pickups in person (cash or postal money orders only for in person pickup). Check my feedback and buy with confidence.
