Description
1900 First Edition of THE WIZARD OF OZ L Frank Baum Click Images to Enlarge The first edition of L. Frank Baum's immortal classic, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". With pictures by W. W. Denslow. Published in Chicago by George M. Hill Co., 1900. Approximately 9 x 7 inches. 261 pages. 24 color plates (including the title page). Complete. No free endpapers as issued. This is the first edition, second state of text: The publisher's advertisement has no box; line one of page 14 begins "low wail of..."; fourth line from bottom on page 81 has "pieces"; line 1 on page 227 begins "While the Woodman..."; the colophon is in thirteen lines with no box; broken type on the last lines on pages 100 and 186; the copyright notice, dated 1899, is on the verso of the Introduction page; the blue dots are present on the moon on the plate facing page 34; red shading on the horizon is not present on the plate facing page 92. The binding is variant C, with the small o of "Co." within the large C. Condition: pages and plates are overall in nice, clean condition. There is a small stain at the bottom of the title that is on the ad page opposite and goes through to the following few pages. One plate is trimmed roughly along the edge (see photo). One plate has a small chip out of the top right corner. There is a mild dampstain to the very lower corners beginning with page 217 to the end. Pencil and ink inscriptions on the first page dated Christmas 1904 (a Christmas present to Jack Sellers from his Aunt Jenny). A few small dog-ears. All told the interior is much nicer than usually seen in this book. The binding, however, is heavily soiled, the spine especially very dark, the front cover with abrasions at the bottom and a few other scattered areas. Spine ends worn away. Cover is coming loose a little at the front. This is a good opportunity to add this important children's book to your collection. Typically found at many thousands more, with a first edition first state in fine condition currently listed at $100,000. PayPal, money order, check (will hold until check clears).Shipping quoted is via registered mail insured. Cost will vary depending on location, or if waiving insurance or choosing a different shipping method.
