Description
1588 Geneva Bible Title: Geneva Bible, 1588 Description of Contents & Condition: 8vo (over 7¾" - 9¾" tall); Geneva or Breeches Bible of 1588 - 3 Volumes in One. Quarto volume bound in Victorian (?) full brown calf with blindstamped ruling and details to boards. Raised bands to spine with blindstamped fleurons to compartments. Gilt spine titles. Extremities well rubbed but binding and pageblock solid and strong. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Three volumes in one: Geneva or Breeches Bible published by Deputies of Christopher Barker 1588. (Herbert 199). After this is bound 'Two Right Profitable and Fruitful Concordances' Collected by R.F.H (Robert Herrey). also 'Imprinted by the Deputies of Christopher Barker' and finally 'The Whole Booke of Psalmes Collected into English meetre by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others..' published 1588 by the Assignes of Richard Day. The Bible; pagination : 38 leaves preliminaries, 554 leaves. Missing the title page and approximately 20 leaves of preliminaries. Leaves between 239 and 249 (Psalms and Proverbs) are absent and have been replaced with 8 leaf section from another source with no loss to the text although this inserted section has been shaved to the detriment of 0.5-1cm of the margin notes. This edition begins with AA4 of the book of Common prayer (The Litany) and is thus missing all of 'Proper Lessons' which was issued with this edition. Signatures : A-Gg7, (Inserted gather FF8), Jj-Jjj2, *1-*iiii, Kkk-Yyy8, Zzz10. The first four leaves are strengthened along the fore edge with paper just impinging on the final letters of some of the lines. Leaves 9 and 10 are missing a narrow 5x1cm strip from the upper edge affecting the chapter headings and first two lines of text. The lower corner is missing from leaf 22 (Genesis) with loss to the text measuring approximately 7x5cm. Several sections have been repaired rather clumsily with paper most notably the lower corner of leaf 40 just affecting the margin notes, the bottom corner of leaf 128 affecting the margin notes and the final letters of 9 lines of text. 9x1 strip missing from fore edge margin of leaf 132 (Riiii) with loss to some margin notes. Leaf 145 has a 4x1.5cm semi-circular loss to the centre of fore edge also affecting some margin notes. 2cm loss to upper corner of leaf 160 affecting the title, leaf 236 missing 2x6cm strip from upper corner affecting the first two lines of text and the margin notes. The following 3 leaves of the original text have some repairs to the lower edge with some loss of the text. Leaf 250 and 251 have become affixed along the bottom edge. A wormhole develops to a track and then diminishes again along the gutter between leaves 350 and 370 touching on a few letters at it's longest length of 1.5cm. Leaf 356 has a repaired 7x3 cm section to the lower corner affecting the lower couple of verses on each side, leaf 357 has a smaller repair along the lower edge affecting a few lines of text and leaf 358 (Prophets) has a paper repair along the bottom half of the leaf with loss of 50% of the text. Repairs to the lower corner of l388 have caused it to adhere along the lower edge of 387 and result in some loss of the lower 2-3 verses of text. 456 (Mark) has a semi-circular loss of 3x7cm to the centre of the fore edge affecting approximately 15 lines of text and the margin notes. There is a similar loss to leaf 464. Loss to the lower corner of leaf 483 (4-5cm) affecting a few lines of text and the margin notes. Repairs to the lower 3-4cm of 512 with some loss to text. A few other very minor nicks and small repairs and some very occasional marginalia. Herrey's Concordance; 82 leaves - Signatures A-K8, L2. Complete. There is a repaired section measuring 4x5cm missing from the top corner impinging on some letters of the title. A tear to the lower section of Diiii has resulted in a loss of approximately a third of the text. Book of Psalms; pagination - (10), 91, (9) pages. Signatures A-F8, G7. Missing final leaf. There is repaired section to E8 (numbered 69) at the lower corner measuring 7x3cm and affecting a few words of text on either side of the leaf. The last leaf of the book has been extensively repaired along the fore edge with a 8x4cm loss of text at the upper corner. Despite the odd loss to a few pages and some minor soiling and nicks this is a carefully bound, decent copy of these three works.
